Apple Intelligence is heading to China, with Alibaba's Qwen under the hood Category: Industry

Apple is reported to be launching Apple Intelligence in China in December, using Alibaba's Qwen models. Here is what is confirmed, what is reported, and why developers should care.
Apple Intelligence is on track to reach iPhones in China, and the AI behind it will be built on Alibaba's Qwen models. Alibaba has confirmed the Qwen integration, and Bloomberg reports the launch is planned for December with iOS 27.3. Apple has not given a launch date itself.
What was announced
- Regulatory approval. In July, China's Cyberspace Administration published an approval list that included Apple's generative AI suite, according to Reuters. Alibaba confirmed to CNBC that its Qwen model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence.
- Network permits. The South China Morning Post reports that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently granted Apple the network access permits needed to add Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models.
- Timing and scope. Bloomberg reports a December launch with iOS 27.3, starting with a limited feature set: basic photo editing and some text tools. The newer Siri AI, Image Playground and the latest Genmoji are reported to be missing at launch.
Why it matters
Apple is not shipping one AI model worldwide. It is using a different model provider in a different country to meet local rules. For anyone building AI products, that is a real design constraint: the same app may need to work with different models, with different strengths and limits, depending on where the user is.
It is also another sign of how widely Qwen is now used. Alibaba has released several Qwen models with open weights, so developers can run them themselves.
What to learn next
- Learn to call a model through an API and to swap models without rewriting your app. Keep the model name and settings in one config file.
- Practise evaluating two models on the same prompts before choosing one. Our ML roadmap tracker has a checklist for this.
- Read a model's licence and data terms before you build on it.
